THE VOICE OF THE OCEAN PROJECT

Flutes on a sound field recording taken from the sea in Livorno, Tuscany.

The Voice of the Ocean project is a modular project born from the wish to create a frame that encourages and promotes artistic collaborations and co-creations, as a celebration of our interdependency from the space and community where we live. As the Ocean can be taken as a beautiful metaphor of the fluidity of our reality, this project is also in constant development, changing shape and form depending on who takes part in the different parts of the project.

The title of the project comes from a small book of text scores I have written accompanied by illustrations done by the Italian illustrator Costanza Lettieri. The texts and illustration of the tiny book serves as a starting point and sparkle for different performances to take shape.

The first version of the piece was presented in a version for solo flutist/performer for a children audience (7-11 years old) in occasion of the contemporary music festival Uuden Musiikkin Lokakuu in Oulu (FI). Different flutes, seashells, words and the presence and hum of almost 1500 children were part of this version, which shape will it take next?
